Political parties don’t have values, they have strategies. Neither party is guided by any sort of core principles. If you believe that yours is, then the strategy is working. —Altazimuth Media

“Mitch, the left or right direction of the drift is irrelevant. Every position on the political spectrum claims the moral high ground but none of them have a supportable claim. Tyrants oppress. It’s what they do. The only question is whom do you oppress first? Whose freedom of action will you curtail initially? Which subset of the population will you drape with the mantle of evil?”
“Well, I have some suggestions.”
“Okay, but the initially oppressed group must always be enlarged. They’ll come up with more and more categories and eventually everyone is oppressed. Government always gets bigger and more repressive. That’s ingrained. Then one day they come for you.”
Mitch rolled his eyes. It was hardly the first time he had been forced to listen to Calvin’s theory on the tendency of government to drift toward tyranny . There was no point arguing with Calvin. Arguments are won when somebody changes their mind. Changing Calvin’s would require brain surgery.
“Tyrants have to have conflict and crisis. There have to be dark forces and malevolent cabals for the tyrant to protect you from. Conflict is crucial. If there is no conflict, it has to be invented. Look at the way campaigns are run now. Both parties tell the voters that the other party is in league with the Devil and they want to eat your children. They frighten you into voting for their guy.”
“Nobody invented this Calvin. This is a real crisis.”
“No, Mitch. It’s not real. None of the things your party tried to scare you with are going to happen. That’s an irrational fear. If you put your trust any political party, then you are a moron. You’re not necessarily evil, but you are profoundly stupid. Political parties don’t have values, they have strategies.”
